questions:
1. What is known about the VUMmx1 that is pertinent to this study?
2. Describe the behavioral paradigm. Why was octopamine (OA) the neurotransmitter of choice? How does the training protocol in this study compare with the training protocols in other classical conditioning paradigms or other olfactory learning studies (Aplysia, Pavlov's dogs, etc.)?
3. What is the proposed control for the potential general excitability change with OA injection? Do you buy it?
4. The authors claim that the pairing of OA in the AL with odor supports acquisition but not consolidation. What data supports this claim? What is their claim for the role of the MB in classical conditioning?
5. The authors suggest that ablation of specific brain structures would be useful in studying their roles in learning and memory. Based on the evidence presented what would you predict would be the behavioral result in ablation of the AL, MB and LPL?
6. What would you predict behaviorally if the odor stimulus (CS)was presented 24 hours after training with paired OA injections into the AL versus paired OA injections into the MB?
7. Propose a model for how associative learning occurs in the honeybee.
